Einstein Healthcare Network started with just 22 beds in 1866 as the Jewish Hospital. In 2016, we celebrated our 150th year of service to the community.

In 1952, the Jewish Hospital merged with two others in the city—Mount Sinai and Northern Liberties hospitals. Taking on the name of renowned scientist Albert Einstein—who graciously gave his permission —the new network eventually grew to what it is today: a private, not-for-profit organization with several major hospitals, many outpatient centers and numerous primary care and specialty care locations throughout the Philadelphia region.

We began with what was, in the late 1800s, a remarkable and forward-thinking creed: to provide medical care to "the sick and wounded without regard to creed, color or nationality."

Today, we continue to honor that legacy, and our primary mission remains true to the founders’ intent—and our health system has grown and evolved in ways they could not have imagined. We proudly provide compassionate, high-quality healthcare throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, and have gained a reputation for excellence and innovation.

What are we made of? Some would say the very best healthcare professionals. Others would say our excellence and ability to create new treatments and pioneer technologies. And while that’s all true, we are more. We are made of a belief that care should never be delivered without compassion. That treating patients is our job but treating people is our difference. That’s what we’re made of. Einstein Healthcare Network. More than medicine.
