The Mission of the Metropolitan Police Department is to prevent crime and the fear of crime, including terrorism, as we work with others to build safe, healthy and prepared communities throughout the District of Columbia.
Minimum Requirements at the time of application:
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have completed at least 60 hours of college credits
  • Possess an honorable military discharge {if applicable}
  • Possess a valid drivers license
The starting salary is: $44,611 
After 18 months of service: $48,809

Police Officer candidates must successfully pass a written examination, and a thorough background investigation that includes a medical examination, drug screening and a psychological evaluation.

LATERAL TRANSFER PROGRAM

The Lateral Transfer Officer Program was designed to attract experienced officers from other law enforcement agencies that are interested in a career with the MPDC. Salary is commensurate with experience from $46,842 to $65,907.

Job Description

Officers will perform the vital public services of preserving the peace, protecting life and property, preventing crime, apprehending criminals, and enforcing the laws and ordinances of the District of Columbia and the United States. After training, Police Officers will be assigned to diverse patrol duties.

No skills or previous law enforcement experience are required to be considered for employment. Potential applicants must meet the minimum requirements at the time of application.
